UOM stands for Unit of Measure. It defines the standard units used to count, measure, or weigh your items.

Think of it as the "language" your inventory speaks. Without UOMs, the system wouldn't know if "5" means 5 grams, 5 boxes, or 5 shipping containers.

The Two Faces of UOM

Stock UOM: This is the "Base UOM." It’s how you count the item in your warehouse (e.g., "Nos" or "Kg"). All accounting and stock levels are tracked in this unit.

Purchase/Sales UOM: Sometimes you buy in "Boxes" but sell in "Units." ERPNext uses UOM Conversion Factors to do the math for you (e.g., 1 Box = 10 Units).

How to Create a New UOM

If the standard units (like Nos, Kg, or Unit) aren't enough, you can create your own custom ones easily.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Search: Type "UOM" into the awesomebar (search bar) and click on UOM List.
  2. Add: Click the Add UOM button.
  3. Define: * UOM Name: Give it a name (e.g., "Crate" or "Pallet").
  4. Must be Whole Number: Check this box if you can't have a "half" of this unit (you can't sell 0.5 of a Chair, but you can sell 0.5kg of Sugar).
  5. Save: Hit Save
